Calling For A Moratorium On The Storage Of Diesel Fuel Tanks In NYC Buildings
12/02/02
Statement made on behalf of the Skyscraper Safety
Campaign by Monica Gabrielle, Co-Chairperson, at a Press Conference
held on the steps of City Hall on Monday, December 2, 2002, to
support Councilmember Alan Gerson calling for a moratorium on the
storage of diesel fuel tanks in NYC buildings.
We are here today to represent the Skyscraper Safety
Campaign, which is composed of parents and families of Firefighters
and WTC victims. One of the main goals of the SSC is to ensure a
high degree of fire safety for all persons who must live or work in
NYC buildings. Therefore:
- We are supporting Councilmember Alan Gerson's call
for a moratorium on the storage of diesel fuel tanks in NYC
buildings.
- We have seen the disastrous effects of diesel
storage at 7 WTC, and we cannot repeat such a prescription for
disaster in NYC ever again.
- The Skyscraper Safety Campaign calls for Safety,
Quality, and Security to be the hallmark of all buildings in NYC,
especially for all new construction on the WTC site. It is
evident that there is a need for updated codes, specifically the
need for the adoption and enforcement of the International
Building and Fire Code.
The Skyscraper Safety Campaign applauds the efforts
of Councilman Gerson, who has taken a leadership role in this
matter.
