Safety at Ground Zero
The New York Times - Saturday, April 30, 2005 (Late Edition - Final)

To The Editor:

Re: "Meeting About Ground Zero Finds Security at Forefront" (news article, April 27)

Unmet security needs and Port Authority unresponsiveness are not the only potential problem for the new World Trade Center development. Despite the haughty claims of the developer, Larry Silverstein, the fact that the Freedom Tower and other buildings will remain exempt, and therefore immune, from all New York City building and fire codes is a chilling safety and security concern for all.

There is a simple solution: Put the future World Trade Center under the legal jurisdiction of the New York City Building, Fire and Police Departments, just like every other building in the city. In the wake of 9/11, why should any buildings continue to be above the law, and why on earth is this tolerated by our elected officials?
