Not too high
NY Daily News - Letter - January 28, 2003
To the Editor:
Kent, Conn.: As the father of James Gadiel, who
died on the 103rd floor of the north tower, I oppose rebuilding
the World Trade Center taller than 50 stories. Many firefighters
have told me of the impossibility of fighting a fire above that
height.
The Port Authority should be stripped of special
legal immunities and be subject to the same obligations to
tenants as private landlords. The PA must be forced to obey the
same fire and building codes as any other builder in New York
City. If the WTC is built taller than 50 stories, the PA should
locate its offices on the top floor. In the event of major
disaster, no firefighter should be permitted to go above the 50th
floor.
The assurances of safety that we heard at a recent
meeting of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. were identical
to the assurances we heard in the 1960s about the safety of the
original towers. Family members of the victims learned on 9/11
that those original claims were a lie. We have no confidence in
the new claims.
