Unblock 9/11 Probe
NY Newsday - Letter to the Editor - November 29, 2003

The 9/11 Commission has met another roadblock in its search to uncover the causes of Sept. 11. This time it comes from Mayor Michael Bloomberg and fire department union officials. The union claims release of tapes and testimony given by firefighters cannot help the investigation two years after the fact. They are worried that this will reopen memories of that tragic day. The mayor states that he is "dismayed" and "puzzled" that the commission would focus on the city's response and not on the real culprits: the terrorists.

Tapes and testaments are no harsher than the absence of loved ones this holiday season. Maybe a full accounting of that day, no matter how harsh, is needed to set loose the demons. The tragedy of 9/11 was fueled by lapses in leadership, communication and planning.

Full disclosure no matter where it leads is what our country needs.
